Chandrabhaga Beach lies 3 km east of the Konark Sun Temple in Puri district, Odisha. It is one of India's first beaches to receive Blue Flag certification (2020) for water quality, safety, and environmental standards. Less crowded than Puri Beach, it is the sacred bathing site for Magha Saptami — the most important sun-worship festival of Odisha.

Odisha's Cleanest Beach — Blue Flag Certified, Sunrise Sacred, 3 km from the Sun Temple
History of Chandrabhaga Beach
Ancient River Mouth
The Chandrabhaga River once met the sea here — the beach takes its name from this now-dried river. Ancient pilgrims bathed at this confluence before entering the Konark Sun Temple, making the beach an extension of the temple's sacred geography.
Magha Saptami Tradition
For centuries, Hindus have gathered at Chandrabhaga on Magha Saptami (January–February) for a sacred sunrise dip, believing it grants the merit of visiting all seven sacred rivers of India simultaneously. The tradition predates the Sun Temple's construction in 1250 CE.
Blue Flag Recognition (2020)
In 2020, Chandrabhaga became one of India's first eight beaches to earn Blue Flag certification from the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE, Denmark) — recognising its clean water, waste management systems, and environmental education programs.
Significance
Chandrabhaga is the primary bathing ghat for the Magha Saptami festival — Odisha's largest sun-worship event drawing 500,000+ pilgrims annually. The beach's eastern horizon provides an unobstructed sunrise view, aligned with the Konark Sun Temple's orientation. Blue Flag status makes it one of Asia's best-managed beaches for environmental standards.
Festivals
Magha Saptami — January/February
Odisha's largest single-day pilgrimage event: 500,000+ devotees converge for a sacred sunrise bath on the 7th day of Magha month. Special OSRTC buses run from Bhubaneswar and Puri. Temporary markets, food stalls, and devotional music fill the beach from midnight.
Konark Dance Festival — December
The 5-day Konark Dance Festival (December 1–5) extends to Chandrabhaga Beach with sunrise Odissi performances at the water's edge. Temporary bamboo stages are erected facing the sea — the combination of classical dance, sunrise, and ocean backdrop is unique to this location.
Special Highlight
Did You Know? Chandrabhaga Beach received its Blue Flag certification in 2020 — the same year as Puri Beach — making Odisha the only Indian state with two Blue Flag beaches simultaneously. The beach also has a beachhead artificial reef system installed in 2019 to prevent erosion, visible at low tide as stone structures 50 m from the shore.
